Dear OZOOMS,

This year, that is November 26, 2009, the Board of Directors of OZOOMS Alumni
Association decided to have a concert featuring the APO Hiking Society. It has
been a tradition between OZOOMS and APO having a concert at UPLB with "True To
My Music
," "Pause", "EtonAPOsila sa Los Banos" at "IsapAPO". The last concert
was held in 18 years ago.

The main problem today is that the capacity of the Auditorium is only 620
persons. The ideal ticket price for the concert is PhP 500. And also, the use of
the auditorium has significantly increased in amount compared when we were still
students in UPLB.

There are also problems with regards to getting sponsorship. Today, companies
tend to give more in kind rather than cash, such as Nestle will provide Nestea
drinks, radio and television networks will give air time, etc.

For information of the members of the alumni association, the Board of Directors
decided NOT to sanction any annual fees for alumni/alumnae. We believe that this
will just be useless.

So in behalf of the UPLB Zoological Society Alumni Association, I am requesting
instead, that each alumnus or alumna will contribute PhP 5,000.00 for this
endeavor or $ 100.00 (pwede ring sobrahan ng mga taga-aboard, kasi baka
mabawasan sa processing kung saktong $100).

The income that will be generated in this concert will be given to the Marinella
Castillo Scholarship and Thesis Grant, and will serve as initial fund for the
alumni association.

This could be the last time that we could sponsor such event. There maybe no
other APO Hiking Society concert in UPLB in the future.

This will be a great undertaking, which will be highly dependent on the support
of OZOOMS alumni and alumnae.

Iyon lang at hanggang sa muli.

The relationship is symbiotic . . . or probably the more specific term is mutualistic wherein both organisms benefit. Symbiosis is a broad category, which includes mutualism, parasitism and commensalism. Besides, OZOOMS will never allow me to use such S word.

The APO Hiking Society was formed in 1969 as Apolinario Mabini Hiking Society which is initial of Ateneo de Manila High School, their alma mater. It is also a parody of the Sublime Paralytic going hiking. Originally, there were 13 members, which eventually became a trio: Jim Paredes, Danny Javier and Boboy Garovillo. And since during martial law, it is prohibited to use nationalistic and patriotic names. It was trimmed to the Apo Hiking Society.

In 1983, they have just released their 10-track album “True to My Music” which includes “True To My Music”, “When I Met You, “Yakap sa Dilim” and “Kumot at Unan”. OZOOMS sponsored the first concert with the same title of the album. The proceeds of the said concert went to the construction of OZOOMS Library at then Old Chemistry Building. Ray-Ann Fuentes did the front act.

The following year (1984), OZOOMS brought back the Magnificent Trio with the concert simply titled as “Pause”. This was the pioneering event that established the Marinela A. Castillo Memorial Scholarship Fund.

During the year of living dangerously, i.e. 1986, The Apo Hiking Society did a concert in Manila entitled “EtonAPOsila”, with word the Posila lifted from the Agrava Commission’s “Pusila” as uttered by the soldiers who grabbed Ninoy Aquino at the airport. OZOOMS again presented them with “EtonAPOsila sa Los Banos”, which became a post-EDSA gig. The said concert eventually became an album, which is “The Worst of Apo”. Songs like “American Junk” and“Mr. T’s Medley” – songs by Ruben Tagalog with a twist of 80s beats, were included.

Can you beat that? Three concerts in four years.
Wow!
Awesome OZOOMS!

It took five more years before “IsapAPO” was staged. Originally slated on February 6, 1991, the concert was moved to another date, which was February 20, 1991. It was again held in the UPLB Auditorium. The concert showcased the talents of violinist Jay Cayuca and the Hayp Band as front acts.

OZOOMS and Apo Hiking Society is like marriage here in our country.
